🚗 Rental Car Reimbursement
Your plan may reimburse the cost of a rental vehicle while repairs are being performed.
🏨 Trip Interruption Coverage
If your vehicle breaks down away from home, you may be reimbursed for meals, lodging, or transportation.
🛠 Flexible Repair Locations
Many plans allow repairs at:
Dealership service centers
Certified independent shops
National repair chains (Firestone, Pep Boys, etc.)
📋 Coverage Levels
Most VSC providers offer several levels of protection, including:
Basic Powertrain
Covers major drivetrain components (engine, transmission, drive axle)
Mid-level
Adds systems like A/C, electrical, steering & fuel
Exclusionary (Most Comprehensive)
Covers almost everything except listed exclusions (similar to original bumper-to-bumper protection)
⚠️ What’s Usually NOT Covered
Items commonly excluded:
Wear & tear items (brake pads, rotors, wiper blades)
Routine maintenance
Oil changes
Tires
Cosmetic damage
Upholstery
Each plan has its own terms—coverage varies.
Can I use my own mechanic?
In most cases, yes—as long as they are a certified repair facility.
Do I have to buy coverage from the dealership?
No. Third-party coverage is often more flexible and sometimes more affordable than dealership plans.
When should I add protection?
Generally, the older the vehicle, the more expensive service contracts become—and certain coverages may no longer be available as mileage increases. In most cases, the sooner the better.
Are Vehicle Service Contracts the same as warranties?
No. A manufacturer warranty is included with the vehicle. A Vehicle Service Contract is purchased separately and administered by a third-party coverage provider. They can cover the same components - they just aren’t “included” with your vehicle already.
💰 Pricing Expectations
Cost depends on:
Year
Make
Mileage
Current coverage status
Level of plan selected
High-mileage vehicles typically have higher plan costs due to increased risk.
📍 How the Coverage Works
You experience a breakdown
You take vehicle to a licensed repair facility
Facility diagnoses the issue
Coverage provider authorizes applicable repairs
Covered components repaired as outlined in your contract
In many cases, you pay only a deductible if applicable.
